Cheryl started working with CAREX Canada at the beginning of the project in 2007. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Carleton University in Ottawa, where she works on projects in environmental and occupational epidemiology and exposure assessment. We are also pleased to announce that\u00a0<b>Alison Palmer has become CAREX Canada\u2019s Executive Director<\/b>. Alison was hired on with CAREX Canada five years ago to plan and execute knowledge translation activities, and has since taken on a leadership role. There are currently five exposure pathways \u2013 outdoor air, indoor air, dust, soil, and drinking water \u2013 and over 30 substances \u2013 including radon, asbestos, and formaldehyde \u2013 to explore. The estimates allow users to compare substances and exposure pathways, and support priority setting for exposure reduction efforts. eRISK Online, along with a\u00a0<a href=\"\/eRISK_Online_Quick_Guide_2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quick Start Guide<\/a>\u00a0and a comprehensive\u00a0<a href=\"\/eRISK_Online_Manual_2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">User Manual<\/a>\u00a0on using the tool, is available\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carexcanada.ca\/fr\/subscribe\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On September 21st, 2017\u00a0<b>we\u2019re hosting a webinar on how to use the new eRISK Online tool<\/b>. This webinar will show users how to navigate the tool and interpret the lifetime excess cancer risk results it generates, as well as demonstrate some of the tool\u2019s possible applications. Over this time, our team has worked to establish CAREX Canada as the country\u2019s leading source of evidence on Canadians\u2019 exposures to workplace and environmental carcinogens. In 2016-17, the CAREX team worked with partners across the country at federal, provincial, and municipal levels to mobilize evidence on exposures to workplace and environmental carcinogens in various ways. Our current foci are radon and pesticide exposures. For example, we coordinated our efforts to raise awareness of \u2013 and reduce exposure to \u2013 radon in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carexcanada.ca\/fr\/le-radon-dans-les-ecoles-sommaire-de-leffort-de-depistage-au-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">schools<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cela.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Policy-Radon-Child-Care-Sector-EN-Mar2018-Update.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">daycares<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Sun Safety at Work Canada (SSAWC)<\/b>: When funding for the SSAWC project expired in September 2016, CAREX Canada took on the coordinating role of its evolution into a national working group. This group brings together 14 organizations to coordinate efforts to reduce workplace sun exposure across Canada.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carexcanada.ca\/profile\/uv_radiation_solar-occupational-exposures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CAREX Canada estimates<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<b>approximately 1.5 million Canadians are exposed to solar radiation at work<\/b>, making it one of our highest priority exposures. Based on the evaluation, molybdenum trioxide and indium tin oxide were both classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).\u00a0<b>Welding fumes and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from welding were classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1)<\/b>, based on sufficient evidence linking these exposures to lung cancer and ocular melanoma, respectively. Our results show that approximately 87,000 welders are exposed to artificial UV radiation. This radioactive gas can build up in indoor environments, including childcare centres where children and workers may be exposed. To help address this, the Canadian Environmental Law Association and partners compiled a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cela.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Policy-Radon-Child-Care-Sector-EN-Mar2018-Update.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">list<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<b>four possible policy measures to address radon exposure in childcare settings<\/b>. This includes childcare licensing rules, building codes, and the rules governing both occupational health and safety and public health. These drugs are used to treat cancer, but are also associated with increased cancer risk in workplace settings. Results show that\u00a0<b>approximately 75,000 Canadians are exposed to antineoplastic agents at work<\/b>, most of which work as pharmacy staff, nurses, and cleaning workers. Our estimates show that\u00a0<b>approximately 152,000 Canadians are exposed to asbestos at work<\/b>, and many more may be environmentally exposed during home renovations, from asbestos-containing products, or through contaminated clothing from family members who work with asbestos. Organizations such as the\u00a0<b>Canadian Labour Congress<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Canadian Environmental Law Association<\/b>, and\u00a0<b>Canadian Cancer Society<\/b>\u00a0have used our data and resources to help support their efforts to reduce exposure to this known carcinogen, including calls for a ban.
